ChatGPT to Show Ads Based on User Conversations

ChatGPT

ChatGPT may soon display ads tailored to users’ conversations. OpenAI announced the plan on Friday for US users.

The company will test ads in the free version for logged-in adults. Additionally, it introduced an $8-per-month “Go” subscription tier. This tier includes upgraded features, like longer memory and more image creation.

Unlike “Plus” ($20/month) and “Pro” ($200/month) subscriptions, “Go” users will also see ads. Business customers will remain ad-free.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously expressed concerns about ads in ChatGPT. However, the company wants to increase revenue from its 800 million monthly users. This revenue helps fund $1.4 trillion in AI infrastructure over the next eight years. OpenAI expects about $20 billion in annual revenue by the end of 2025.

Last year, OpenAI launched “Instant Checkout.” This tool lets users buy items from retailers like Walmart and Etsy directly through ChatGPT. The company also introduced health, learning, and other tools to make ChatGPT more essential in users’ daily lives.

Targeted advertising could become lucrative for OpenAI. For example, if a user asks about planning a trip, ChatGPT could show hotel or entertainment ads in that location.

During testing, ads will appear at the bottom of ChatGPT’s responses. They will be clearly labeled as “sponsored.” OpenAI stressed that ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Users can trust that responses remain fact-based and useful.

Moreover, OpenAI will not sell user conversations to advertisers. Users can also disable ad personalization. Ads will not appear in chats about health, mental health, politics, or other regulated topics.

Altman previously described combining ads with AI as “uniquely unsettling,” but said he is “not totally against” exploring it carefully.

The plan raises privacy concerns because ChatGPT conversations are often personal. OpenAI must ensure ads are safe and do not promote harmful products.

Finally, ads will not target users under 18. OpenAI uses AI to estimate age based on usage patterns. Other companies, like Meta, have begun similar AI-driven ad targeting.

In conclusion, OpenAI aims to make ads relevant and helpful while keeping user safety and trust a priority.
