NASCAR Driver Greg Biffle, Family Killed in Plane Crash
NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family tragically died Thursday in a plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport, North Carolina.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m., according to airport officials. The airport confirmed an “aircraft incident” and will remain closed during the investigation.
Sources told CNN that six people, including the pilot, died in the crash. Officials have not yet released the full list of victims.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell confirmed several deaths but did not provide exact numbers. Investigators continue to examine the wreckage.
Internet personality Garrett Mitchell, known as Cleetus McFarland, confirmed that Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their two children, Emma and Ryder, were on the plane.
Mitchell said the family was traveling to Florida to visit him. Biffle and Mitchell had worked together during relief efforts for Hurricane Helene victims and racing events.
“Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane,” Mitchell posted on Facebook. “We are devastated.”
Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace confirmed that Craig Wadsworth, a longtime NASCAR community figure, was also on the flight. Wadsworth had driven Wallace’s motorhome for six years.
FAA records show the plane’s tail number, N257BW, belongs to GB Aviation Leasing, a company owned by Greg Biffle. The aircraft was a Cessna C550.
The plane was en route to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport in Florida when the crash occurred. Local, state, and federal responders arrived at the scene immediately.
Statesville City Manager Ron Smith said emergency personnel would remain on site for an extended period. He praised first responders for their swift actions.
Paul L. Hoback Jr. issued a statement expressing sorrow for the victims and their families. He also thanked first responders for their efforts during the tragedy.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will hold a news conference Friday with updates on the investigation. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash.
