Math Results a ‘Serious Problem,’ Senator Brown Says

Math results in Antigua and Barbuda remain below regional averages, Senator Alex Brown warned during the 2026 Budget Debate.

He said the country faces a serious challenge in mathematics education. Furthermore, he urged the government to focus on targeted solutions rather than just funding.

“Funding alone is not enough if outcomes do not improve,” Brown told senators. He stressed that a strategic approach is needed.

Data from Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) results show Antigua and Barbuda consistently lag behind the Caribbean average. Brown noted that while the regional average is around 40 percent, local results fall in the 20s.

“This shows obviously a problem with maths, and we need to find a solution,” he added. Brown admitted he does not have the exact solution but called for urgent focus.

He emphasized that education receives a substantial share of the national budget. However, he argued that money alone cannot solve persistent gaps in student performance.

Brown recommended targeted interventions. For example, he suggested additional support for mathematics teachers, including training and resources. He also called for reforms in teaching methods specifically for mathematics.

“Some effort should be made — whether it’s our teachers, maths teachers, whether they need training or whatever it is — but just have a focus,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of mathematics and English for higher education. Students need strong results in these subjects for university matriculation.

“Maths and English are the two subjects that are very much needed for university matriculation,” Brown said. “We need to focus and make sure that where maths is concerned, we do much better.”

Brown concluded that addressing the problem should be a national priority. Improving education outcomes, he said, directly affects students’ futures and the country’s long-term development.

He called on government, educators, and stakeholders to collaborate on practical steps. The goal, he said, is measurable improvement in mathematics results over time.

Ultimately, Brown urged immediate and focused action. Without it, he warned, students will continue to face barriers to higher education and professional opportunities.

He stressed that mathematics education is not just an academic concern but a key factor in national growth.

With consistent effort, targeted interventions, and proper support, Brown said the country can reverse the trend and raise math performance to regional standards.
