$50K Bounty Offered as PM Warns Against Lawlessness
$50K remains on the table for information leading to the arrest of those behind the APUA arson, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Monday.
He issued the warning during the Lower House sitting for the 2026 Budget debate. At the same time, he pledged firm action to protect national stability.
Specifically, Browne addressed the burning of Antigua Public Utilities Authority conduits and materials at Morris Bay. He confirmed the reward will remain open indefinitely.
Moreover, he stressed that criminal acts never expire. According to the Prime Minister, justice can still apply years later.
For example, he said a video surfacing long after the crime could still trigger prosecution. Therefore, he urged those with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, Browne delivered a clear message on public order. He said Antigua and Barbuda will not slide into chaos.
“There is no way this country will descend into lawlessness and anarchy,” he told Parliament. As a result, he promised decisive leadership.
In addition, Browne said he is prepared to act if disorder threatens public safety. He warned he would intervene if required.
Notably, he said he could bypass the Attorney General, who also serves as Minister of Police. If necessary, he would issue direct instructions to the appropriate units.
However, Browne emphasized that his position is not political. Instead, he described it as a matter of duty.
He said his actions aim to protect citizens and preserve stability. Furthermore, he noted that his oath of office demands firm decisions.
At the same time, Browne cautioned those who may seek to provoke unrest. He made clear that violence is never encouraged.
Importantly, he said police will never receive orders to harm anyone. Still, officers retain the right to defend themselves.
If confrontation occurs, Browne said responsibility rests with those who provoke it. Consequently, he urged calm and lawful behavior.
Additionally, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his stance on crime. He said violence and disorder will not thrive under his leadership.
He added that public safety remains a top priority. Therefore, law enforcement will receive full support within the law.
In closing, Browne called on citizens to help protect the nation. He encouraged cooperation with authorities.
Ultimately, he said stability benefits everyone. With firm leadership and public support, he vowed to keep Antigua and Barbuda safe.
