2 people died and three others were injured during a shooting at a high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The incident happened on Feb. 16 at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena. The arena is about five miles from Providence. The game had just begun when gunfire broke out.

According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooting appeared to be targeted. She said investigators believe it was linked to a family dispute. Authorities also confirmed that the suspected gunman is dead.

Meanwhile, emergency crews rushed the injured victims to a nearby hospital. Police said they remain in critical condition. However, officials have not yet released further details about those involved.

The matchup featured Coventry/Johnston and Blackstone Valley Co-op. The co-op team includes players from several area schools. Importantly, school leaders confirmed that all student-athletes were safe.

North Providence Public Schools Superintendent Joseph Soho notified families soon after. He said all students participating in the game were unharmed. In addition, he noted that the situation involved spectators at the arena.

Eyewitnesses described confusion and fear inside the rink. Chip DeLorenzo, who was taking photos at the game, said the scene turned chaotic within seconds. People ducked for cover and then ran toward exits. Players quickly left the ice and sought safety.

Police officers arrived within minutes. Soon after, they secured the area and began their investigation. Authorities later advised the public to avoid the vicinity while officers worked.

State and federal officials also responded. Governor Dan McKee said he was monitoring developments and coordinating with law enforcement. In addition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Boston said it was prepared to assist if needed. Officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat.

As the investigation continues, the Pawtucket community faces shock and grief. More information is expected as authorities complete their review.
